Cyclone separator is widely used for removal of dust particles from the working fluid. A difference in centrifugal force acting on fluid and solid particles is mainly responsible for their separation. The centrifugal force is generated due to swirling flow of fluid inside the device. Heavy solids of rotating stream gets separated at the bottom of the cyclone due to their own higher inertia.

 

Problem definition

The objective of this project is to perform a CFD analysis to determine following performance parameters as given below: 

•  Flow pattern (axial and tangential velocity variation at different cross sections, path-lines from inlet to outlet of cyclone) 

•  Pressure distribution 

•  Particle separation efficiency in the cyclone 

 

Solution 

•  Particle trajectories of the dispersed phase are calculated within a Lagrangian reference frame, for which, the validated                          Discrete Phase Model is then chosen, to calculate solid separation efficiency of cyclone separator

•  Separation efficiency was later enhanced and pressure drop was reduced by carrying out design optimization studies by                        changing shell height, vortex finder diameter and height, and other geometrical configurations of cyclone

•  Due to continuous impingement of solids on the walls of cyclone separator, walls erode with time. Hence erosion study was also             carried out to understand the nature, region and rate of erosion
