In an IC Engine, due to increase in engine temperature during operation, the NOx emission increases. Exhaust Gas Recirculation (EGR) cooler were developed to improve emission performance of the engine.
EGR Cooler is a heat exchanger that uses engine coolant (from oil cooler) to reduce exhaust gas temperature prior to recirculating them through the engine’s intake system
Problem definition
• The main objective is to find pressure drop and temperature rise/drop across the shell and tube sides of the cooler
• Effect of corrugated tubes over smooth tubes on heat transfer
• To simulate the flow distribution inside and identify no/low flow zone as they are the reason for hot spots
• Suggest design changes such as addition of baffles to increase coolant residence time and effective heat transfer
