Prilling is an important process of chemical process industry used for solidification of a molten liquid. Droplets of the molten liquid fall down where they gets solidified and cooled by heat transfer to a counter-current air stream for getting converted into spherical particles.

Problem definition 

The objective of this project is to perform a CFD analysis to determine following performance parameters as given below:
•   To determine the flow behaviour of the air through the prills of ammonium nitrate inside the silo
•   To determine the pressure distribution of air inside the silo
•   Suggest design changes such as addition of baffles to increase coolant residence time and effective heat transfer

A thermal power plant in Chhattisgarh, invited our technical team to undertake the failure analysis of 2 boilers each of 90 TPH capacity using computerized simulations. Different parts of the boiler such as primary & secondary Superheater tubes, Economizer tubes & APH tubes were not modelled. All these components were modelled as lumped systems.


Problem definition 

The objective of this project is to perform a CFD analysis to determine following performance parameters as given below:

•   To determine the flow & thermal behaviour of air through different sections of a boiler

•   CFD analysis for operating as well as start-up conditions of boiler

•   Suggest design changes such as addition of baffles to improve flow distribution and reduce flow concentration over a particular zone

 

Solution 

•   Skewed behaviour of the flow & high velocity zone was observed towards the APH side wall

•   The velocity concentrated zone around Secondary Super Heater (SSH) was observed to be acting as failure zone resulting in tubes         weakening

•   In-depth analysis and design suggestions for optimized performance
